Bio

Stephen Quinlan I am an IRCHSS Government of Ireland Scholarship PhD candidate at the UCD School of Politics and International Relations (SPIRe). I commenced the Structured PhD programme in September 2008 and am primarily based in the UCD Geary Institute, Belfield, Dublin 4.  Previously, I completed my BA (Hons) in Politics and History at University College Dublin in 2006 and a First Class Honours MA in Comparative Politics in 2007.  

I served as a Research Assistant at the UCD Public Opinion and Political Behaviour Programme in the year preceding the commencement of my PhD. I have also performed consultancy work for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland (2008) and for the Irish public service broadcaster, RTÉ (2007 Irish general election coverage, 2008 and 2009 Lisbon Treaty referendum coverage and 2009 local and European election coverage).

My research interests are varied but centre on electoral behaviour and public opinion. Areas that I have a keen interest include: 

  • Electoral Participation, especially among young people.
  • Electoral Behaviour and Public Opinion in Ireland, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada and the United States.
  • Electoral Systems.
  • European Integration and Public Opinion and referendums.
  • Political Parties and Party Systems .
  • Opinion Polls and Opinion Poll Methodology.
  • Graphic Design for Elections.
  • Survey Design and Application of Different Survey Techniques.
  • Irish Politics.
  • US Politics & Governance.
  • British Politics.
